Wildlife Photography: Getting off Auto & Going Creative
Friday 22 September

Have you ever wondered when to use which shooting mode on your camera?
You may use your camera in automatic mode, you may prefer full artistic control where you dial in every parameter in manual mode, or you may prefer something in between, such as shutter or aperture priority where you determine one and the camera sets the corresponding values. There is no one setting to suit all, and different subjects and situations lend themselves to different modes and camera settings.
We explore the details of each shooting mode, including aperture priority, shutter priority, and fully manual mode. We explore when you might use which, as well as some highly practical ‘go-to settings’ in each mode for a variety of subjects both moving and still.
For those with less experience using alternative shooting modes, this workshop serves as a great introduction to experimenting with a range of new settings; for those with more experience, it serves as a springboard into the nuances of fine-tuning camera settings according to your subject.
Finally, we explore the essence of exposure compensation and how to fine-tune camera exposure for the most beautiful light.
This workshop is ideal for all levels of photography. Content details will be tailored to the course attendees on the day. Each day is a mixture of classroom learning with an emphasis on outdoor hands-on practice and 1-2-1 tuition.
From 10 am to 4 pm at the Barnes Wetland Centre. Booking Essential.
Wildlife Photography: Landscape & focal length
Thursday 19 October

What better place to learn the principles of landscape photography than the natural beauty of the London Wetland Centre!
In this workshop we look at how to arrange the elements in a frame to translate a beautiful scene that catches your eye into a well-balanced and impactful photograph. Composition is key and we explore a range of compositional guidelines and techniques to bring your landscape images to life.
Often, we gaze at an image because something about the light draws our eye. Both the time of day and the nature of the light play a significant role. We examine different light situations as well as the role of colour temperature and white balance in landscape photography. Good technical skills are vital and we will run through a range of camera settings to help you achieve great results.
We examine focal length in this workshop and the various merits of using different focal lengths to achieve your objectives. We’ll also touch on equipment and accessories of interest in this genre of photography.
This workshop is ideal for all levels of photography. Each day is a mixture of classroom learning with outdoor hands-on practice and plenty of time for 1-2-1 tuition. Content details will be tailored to the specific interests and experience of the course attendees on the day.
Please bring your camera with fully charged batteries and formatted memory cards. A standard mid-range zoom lens is perfect and if you have a longer lens as well bring it along. Feel free to bring any further equipment you have if you wish to experiment, such as filters and a method of stabilising your camera.
From 10 am to 4 pm at the Barnes Wetland Centre. Booking Essential.
Wildlife Photography: Low autumnal light
Saturday 25 November

Late autumn is a wonderful time to capture the glorious end-of-year light and flex your creative muscles.
Days are shorter and the weather is constantly shifting from shimmering sunshine to heavy clouds, rain, mist, and fog. It is a perfect time of year to make the most of the low angle of the sun and the ever-changing light.
We explore ways to photograph in a variety of lower and less forgiving light conditions and to adjust camera settings to make the most of creative possibilities. This includes metering, creative exposure, and how to over and under-expose our images with exposure compensation to enhance the prevailing light.
Light direction plays a key role in bringing out texture and finer details and we look at how to use side and backlighting for added impact. We also explore colour temperature and camera white balance and how we can fine-tune camera settings to optimise the light and add creative impact.
Camera filters are very useful, and we touch on how to use a polarising filter to reduce glare and boost saturation to further enhance our images.
This workshop is ideal for all levels of photography. Each day is a mixture of classroom learning with outdoor hands-on practice and plenty of time for 1-2-1 tuition. Content details will be tailored to the specific interests and experiences of the course attendees on the day.
